Hassuru Dentah

Hassuru Dentah oral care

Hassuru Dentah App was developed to reduce anxiety and fear for both dentists and patients. Specifically, it uses illustrations and videos to explain treatments and instruments, tailored to the behavioral characteristics of people with developmental disorders who often panic due to anxiety about treatment procedures and instruments. In addition, digital picture cards help explain treatment procedures and further reduce anxiety and fear about dental treatment. As a result, Hassuru Dentah App enhances oral care by improving communication between dentists and patients.

App Features

Hassuru Dentah App is designed to assist in dental care and oral hygiene support, especially for individuals with developmental disabilities. Some key features include:

  1. Digital visual support using cards: These cards help patients understand dental procedures through customizable pictures.
  2. Step-by-step guidance: This feature reduces anxiety for patients by visually illustrating what to expect during a treatment session
  3. Integration with tablets and digital devices: Patients can engage with familiar digital interfaces for a more personalized experience
  4. Customizable treatment plans: Dentists and caregivers can arrange, edit, and store picture cards for different patients.

Developing Process

The development of Hustle Dentah was inspired by real-life experiences of treating individuals with autism and other developmental disorders. The process involved:

  1. Observing challenges faced by patients with developmental disabilities during dental treatments.
  2. Prototyping a system that digitized traditional picture cards used in therapy
  3. Incorporating expert feedback from specialists in pediatric dentistry and developmental disabilities.
  4. Developing a pilot version and testing it with dental clinics and support organizations.
  5. Securing funding from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare to continue refining the system.

Challenges

  1. Limited market demand: Assistive tools for individuals with disabilities have a small market, making funding difficult.
  2. High development costs: Creating a fully functional and interactive support system required significant resources.
  3. Integration with existing dental practices: Dentists and caregivers needed training and adaptation to effectively use the system.
